Litmus vs Universal Indicator: The Difference

Both sit in the same drawer in every school lab, both change colour in acid, and both get called "indicator paper". But one of them answers a yes/no question and the other gives you a number — and using the wrong one costs marks.

The short answer: litmus only tells you whether a solution is acidic or basic — red in acid, blue in base — while universal indicator is a mixture of dyes that produces a whole range of colours, telling you approximately how acidic or basic it is on the pH scale.

What litmus is

Litmus is a natural dye extracted from lichens. It comes as paper or solution in two forms, and the rule is short enough to memorise in one go:

  • Red litmus turns blue in a base.
  • Blue litmus turns red in an acid.
  • Neither changes in a neutral solution.

The mnemonic most students use: blue to red = acid.

Its limitation is that it behaves as a single indicator with one broad switching range, roughly pH 4.5–8.3. It flips once and then it's done. Lemon juice at pH 2 and orange juice at pH 3.5 both turn blue litmus the same red, so litmus can't tell them apart. It answers which side of neutral and nothing more.

That's not a flaw so much as a design. When all you want is a fast yes/no, litmus is quick, cheap and unambiguous.

What universal indicator is

Universal indicator solves the single-switch problem by not being a single dye. It's a carefully balanced mixture of several indicators, each changing colour at a different pH. Blended together they produce a continuous colour gradient across the scale.

The familiar sequence:

Match the colour against the chart on the tube and you have a pH estimate — good to roughly one unit. That's plenty for classifying a household substance, checking soil or confirming a solution is roughly where you expect.

What it isn't is precise. For a real measurement you need a pH meter, which reads to two decimal places via an electrode rather than by eye. Universal indicator gives you 4-ish; a meter gives you 4.17.

How to choose between them

Use litmus when the question is categorical. Is this an acid? Did the gas turn the damp paper blue? One bit of information, delivered instantly.

Use universal indicator when you want a value. Comparing the acidity of two soft drinks, testing garden soil, ranking household cleaners.

Use neither in a titration. This surprises people. Universal indicator changes colour gradually over many pH units, so there's no sharp endpoint to see — the colour just drifts. Titrations need a single indicator with a narrow range, chosen to match the equivalence point: phenolphthalein (colourless below about pH 8.3, pink above about 10) when a weak acid is titrated with a strong base, or methyl orange (red below 3.1, yellow above 4.4) when a weak base is titrated with a strong acid.

Use a pH meter when accuracy matters. Any coloured, cloudy or intensely dark solution also defeats both papers.

Worked examples

Predict the result before reading on.

  • Blue litmus dipped in lemon juice → turns red. Lemon juice is acidic (pH ≈ 2).
  • Red litmus dipped in soapy water → turns blue. Soap is basic.
  • Universal indicator in pure watergreen, pH 7.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting the "wrong" litmus paper to react. Red litmus in acid stays red; blue litmus in base stays blue. No colour change is still a valid result, and it's often the answer being tested.
  • Using universal indicator for a titration. Its colour change is too gradual to give a sharp endpoint. Pick a narrow-range indicator instead.
  • Calling universal indicator a pH measurement. It's an estimate to about one pH unit. A meter measures; an indicator suggests.
