Solute vs Solvent: What's the Difference?
Every solution question starts with the same small decision, and it trips up more students than the calculations that follow: which one is the solute and which is the solvent? Get it backwards and your concentration answer is upside down.
The short answer: the solute is the substance that gets dissolved; the solvent is the substance that does the dissolving. Together they make a solution, and the solvent is normally whichever one is present in the greater amount.

What a solute is
A solute is whatever disappears into the mixture. Its particles get separated from one another and surrounded by solvent particles.
Solutes can be any state of matter:
- Solid solute: salt or sugar in water.
- Liquid solute: a small amount of ethanol in a large amount of water.
- Gas solute: carbon dioxide dissolved in a fizzy drink; oxygen dissolved in a river.
Importantly, dissolving doesn't destroy or chemically change the solute. Salt dissolved in water is still NaCl — just as separated Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions wrapped in water molecules. Boil the water off and you get your salt back, which is what makes a solution a mixture, not a compound.
What a solvent is
A solvent is the medium doing the work. It surrounds the solute particles and pulls them apart, and it sets the state of the final solution — dissolve a solid in a liquid and you get a liquid.
Water is the most important solvent on Earth, so much so that it's nicknamed the universal solvent. Its polarity lets it dissolve ionic compounds and polar molecules, which covers most of biology and a good chunk of the chemistry lab.
But plenty of others matter: ethanol in medicines and perfumes, acetone in nail polish remover, hexane for extracting oils. Nonpolar solvents dissolve the nonpolar things water can't touch.
How to tell them apart
Rule 1 — which one is there more of? In 5 g of salt stirred into 500 g of water, water is the solvent. Easy.
Rule 2 — which one kept its state? In a solid–liquid mix the liquid is nearly always the solvent, because the solution ends up liquid.
Rule 3 — which one had to be broken up? The one whose particles got separated is the solute.
Rule 1 is the default, but it has exceptions. In concentrated acids, water is often outnumbered and still called the solvent by convention, because it's the medium the chemistry happens in. When you're unsure, ask which substance is acting as the medium.
Solutions aren't always liquid, either. Air is a solution of oxygen, argon and CO₂ in nitrogen — a gas dissolved in a gas. Brass is a solid solution of zinc in copper, where the zinc atoms slot into the copper's shared electron sea. The solute/solvent logic still works: nitrogen and copper are the majority components, so they're the solvents.
Worked examples
Name the solute and the solvent before reading on.
- Sugar stirred into tea — solute: sugar; solvent: water.
- Fizzy drink — solute: carbon dioxide (and sugar); solvent: water.
- Air — solute: oxygen, argon, CO₂; solvent: nitrogen (78%).
- Vinegar (about 5% acetic acid) — solute: acetic acid; solvent: water.
- Brass — solute: zinc; solvent: copper.
- Iodine dissolved in ethanol (tincture of iodine) — solute: iodine; solvent: ethanol.
- Seawater — solutes: NaCl and other salts; solvent: water.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the solvent must be a liquid. It's usually a liquid, but air and alloys are perfectly good gaseous and solid solutions.
- Saying the solute "disappears." It's still fully present — dissolved salt water weighs exactly as much as the salt plus the water you started with. Mass is conserved.
- Mixing up which one goes on the bottom of a concentration formula. Molarity is moles of solute ÷ litres of solution — solute on top, and the volume is of the whole solution, not of the solvent alone.
